Contemporary narratives of childhood: a visual
essay
Description
This activity takes part of a research project based on creating
narratives of childhood and adolescence that we develop collaboratively with
the EHU (Universidad del País Vasco). During the research process, the students
move from the interpretation of their self-representations of childhood to the
analysis of social representations of childhood by the contemporary artists. As
teachers we provide both the guidelines and resources to develop the research
as well as a constant feedback of the work in progress. Eventually, the main
aim of this research is the production of contemporary narratives of childhood
as part of this research process, consequently, the students will present their
visual essays at the end of the course. This project is complementary to the topics
and readings of Science, Society and Culture, that simultaneously will improve
our reflections and learnings on visualising contemporary childhood.
The contemporary representations of the artists. We have selected five different artists dealing with
contemporary narratives of childhood:
4. Francis Alÿs (Amberes, Bélgica, 1959) 5. Jorge Pineda (Barahona, República Dominicana, 1961)

3.Anastasia Khoroshilova (Moscú, 1978)
